Mother Gives Son Marijuana to Treat His Autism

In an article from ABC News, it tells the story of a mother that helped her son's behavior with marijuana infused brownies. Not only is this controversial and not believed by myself, marijuana is illegal. In the article, Dr. Sharon Hirsch states that there is no evidence that marijuana helps autistic people. She says that all it does is get the child stoned and addicted. With this child's problems, she said it may lead him to psychosis including schizophrenia. The ABC News article also references an article from the magazine Double X where a mother said that she helped her autistic son by giving him marijuana cookies.

What is this world coming to when adults believe that drugs can help autistic people? There is no possible way that it can. No doctors use it or recommend it, but some parents do it. That is very irresponsible of them at so many levels. I think that the parents should do jail time for that.

  1. Isn't Aspberger's a milder form on the spectrum? I don't see why the marajuana wouldn't help children and adults with autism. The seem to have, what I describe, as an intense phobia of the world. Why not take something to help them mellow out and relax. Don't be so quick to judge these women who have taken an alternative approach. You don't know what it's like to be in their position, to love their child so much and have to bear with the pain of watching them struggle to free themselves from their own minds.

  2. Mmm, I don't entirely agree.

I mean, the psychiatrist interviewed says there "no evidence at all". Well, the evidence lies in the fact that the child started eating, and calmed down, after eating marijuana cookies. That's all the evidence a parent needs, really.

Yes, there could be various side-effects and concerns, but such is the case with all medication.

The very reason there have been no clinical trials to see the beneficial effects of marijuana on illnesses, is the lack of government funding.

So, if a parent uses marijuana to help with the raising of a child, and it seems to have positive effects, that's a good thing.

If the government has a problem with it, let them fund proper research into the subject.

  3. The whole thing is that it seems to have positive effects. It's not a for sure thing. As for side effects, it's not a medication...it's an illegal drug. Big difference.

As for Asperger's being a milder form, do you really know what people with Asperger's have to go through in their life?

  4. I don't personally know. I don't have the disorder. Do you know what other's on the spectrum who aren't nearly as high functioning go through in their lives? Marajuana has medicinal purposes.

  5. I know that it does, but the problem is that it hasn't been researched for this purpose. If it was researched thoroughly and proven to be effective, that would be fine in my opinion.
